24th Annual Individual & Team Triathlon Race Summary

By Dr. Jeff Holter

Race Recap:
The weather reports were not so great leading up to the 24th Annual Bucyrus YMCA Triathlon, but when Saturday morning arrived, we actually had a very nice day for the race – overcast and somewhat cool, with very little wind. The course was still a little wet, but the earlier rain actually helped us out, in that it washed away most of the mud that was in the road in front of the Y from the city’s drainage construction project.

This year's event, consisting of a 500-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 5K run, welcomed a field of 40 individuals and 5 teams.

The winner of the Men’s division was Kerry Kean with a fast time of 1:07:09. The Top Crawford County Male was Samuel Rager in 1:16:45. The top finisher in the Women's division was Jennifer Myers with a time of 1:13:53. Repeating as the Top Crawford County Female was Erin Fishpaw in a time of 1:14:03.

In the Team divisions, Team Gribble won the Coed Team category (1:11:38), and Team Strayer won the Male Team category (1:00:16).

The 500-yard swim leg is in an indoor 6-lane pool with 2 competitors per lane. Heats are seeded based upon the estimated swim time from the entry forms. Swimmers can towel off and put on their biking gear in the pool area or dash around the building to the bike staging area in the parking lot. The fastest swimmers leave the pool area within 5 minutes with most completing the swim in 7-10 minutes. The 12-mile bike route is a fast, mostly flat loop on country roads and state routes. Helmets are required. The route is not closed to traffic, although volunteers aid bikers at each turn. The bike course crosses the railroad tracks twice, but top competitors average over 25 mph on the course. A 3.1-mile run (5K) (flat, straight, blacktop, out and back) route on county roads with a water-stop at the midpoint completes the event.
